Training Tips - Rhythm
Rhythm is the first step in the training pyramid
Rhythm is the result of mental and physical relaxation. It allows the horse to flow without resistance. The horse moves forward in the default gaits that it has. It could be pace or trot or if you are real lucky , correct walk. Also the horse will be able to rein- back and possibly canter without resistance.
Once the horse can move with rhythm , in flowing cadence, then and only then can you ask the horse to become supple, Really if the horse is moving with rhythm, he will become supple almost on his own, and the exercises for suppling will be easy.
Diane Gueck used to say that she was not concerned about the gaits of the horse in the initial start work. The trick was for the horse to go forward freely.
Remember, engagement will bring the walk out of even the hardest gaited horses. From the walk , all of the other gaits will develop.
When starting your colt, worry only about going forward without resistance. The rest will follow.
more next time, happy gaiting!!
