Around the Ranch – Monsoon Season
Here in the southwest, come July, we start to get a flow of moisture out of old Mexico.
This moisture is called the monsoon. The mornings start out clear and the clouds then start to form. By 2:00pm it will start to rain. In the high country, you can set your watch to it. Even with irrigation, it is hard to keep the farm wet. Things that don’t get irrigated, die. Things that get irrigated, stay alive and grow. But the growth rate is slower because the water we use to irrigate has lost it’s nutrition. So when it rains everything goes nuts. We need the monsoon. With it, we can grow hay and gardens better than just with irrigation water.
The fly season is in full swing here. I don’t know if we have ever had as many flies as we have this year. They are bad. We have deer flies that have jaws bigger than the rest of their bodies. They torment man and beast alike. Good thing that their season only lasts about six weeks. They drink fly spray. Does anyone have a spray or lotion that works on deer flies? I’d like to know.
We have been taking the horses over to our neighbor’s ranch and swimming in their pond. I have not done that for many years. It was fun and refreshing. The horses didn’t want to get out. I think that they enjoyed it also.
