About Bucky & Nancy

bucky-nancy-horses"Horses are not my livelihood, they are my passion" says Bucky. Bucky and Nancy Sparks have owned and operated Sparks Plumbing and Heating for twenty six years. They have seven employees. The shop specializes in hot water heat, new construction and repair work.

The Sparks have three grown children. Two sons, both journeyman plumbers and a daughter studying for a PHD in molecular biology at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) in Heidelberg Germany.

Bucky and Nancy purchased Walking the Dog Ranch in 1994 and began their journey in earnest to produce and train naturally gaited, quality Tennessee Walking Horses. "We would be out on hacks with an entourage of four dogs and we would laugh and say, we aren't riding, we're just walking the dogs." Thus, the name, Walking the Dog Ranch.

Nancy and Bucky both are students of natural horsemanship, reining, and dressage.  Combining the three disciplines, they have developed a training system they call B.L.E.S.S. which is an acronym for balance, looseness, engagement softness and soundness. "A sound mind and body make for an ideal mount," says Nancy.

Bucky travels throughout the U.S. and Canada giving clinics for horses and riders seeking to fine tune their equestrian experience.  Click these links to learn more about hosting a clinic, attending a clinic, or placing your horse in training.

Achieving Gait Naturally

bucky-on-dusty"When we first purchased Tennessee Walking Horses, I felt like a caveman with a ratchet set. I had no idea how to use this wonderful new tool," says Bucky. "We would be going down the road at a hard pace and think we were doing great!"

Our search for knowledge took us to Tennessee where we found the traditional training methods cruel. We felt there had to be a better way to modify gait other than the use of long shank bits, heavy shoes and soring.

The answer was found in classical dressage and natural horsemanship. If a horse learns to carry himself in a balanced, loose and engaged manner, then softness and soundness are the natural result.  This is the philosophy behind B.L.E.S.S., an acronym for balance, looseness, engagement, softness and soundness. B.L.E.S.S. is a holistic approach to training that addresses a gymnastisized body and a confident mind.

Says Bucky, "If a horse is using tight, resistant muscles, then the gaits will be rough.  If he is nervous and fearful, true partnership is impossible.  We want our horses to be sound in body and mind. We want a friend for life."

Testimonials

" this week was my 8th private lesson at Sparks'Bless Your Walking Horse clinic with Bucky and Nancy Sparks. I met them several years ago and over the years, their teaching methods and philosophies have helped me understand and maximize the solid 4- beat flatwalk and the running walk potential in all of our Walking Horses. Each clinic I say , this was the best one, and I find myself saying that again this week. I love the way Bucky's dressage principles combine with his gaited horse expertise to make each horse do better than expected. Lori Northrup , Golden Stride Walker Ranch, F.O.S.H. President"
